When the Doctor refuses to kill the Master, when he holds his dying body, begging him to regenerate, Jack can feel the shock of those surrounding them. After everything they had suffered during the Year that Never Was, they cannot understand. They will not say anything, they respect the Doctor too much, but it will always be there, a loss of understanding in the man they believed in.

Jack knows this, but he understands. He knows. That whatever the man who calls himself John Hart might do, he could never kill him. He can send him away, can refuse him, but never, never destroy him.

He knows what it is to be alone.

Graveside

She came here often, as often as she could between motherhood and Torchwood. She sat and talked, sometimes about her day, sometimes about whatever was on her mind, sometimes about him. And some days she just sat, letting the world go by.

Rhys understood, sort of. He joked he always knew where to find her, after all she was always at the Hub, at home or here.

There were days when she arrived and Alice was there, those days she stayed out of sight. Not leaving, just keeping her distance. Those days, she didn't speak, just allowed her mind to wander. Days like today.

"I've seen you, you know. Seen you sitting at my son's grave. Who are you? What are you doing there?" The voice shocked her out of her mental wanderings, angry and confused.

"My name is Gwen, Alice."

"You know my name. You were involved, weren't you. Another one of those government types who know all about me, and I know nothing."

Gwen's voice was soft.

"I know your father."

Bitterness suffused the beautiful face.

"Well that is a perfectly good reason to leave right now and never come back. That man has brought nothing but pain."

"I am so sorry about Steven. No parent should have to see their child die. No one should have to outlive their children."

Somehow the sincerity in Gwen's voice got through to the distraught woman, and she nodded her thanks. But the anger welled again.

"You are not going to make me forgive him. I will never forgive him for what he did."

"I wouldn't ask you to."

The answer seemed to shock Alice. After a few moments she asked, more calmly.

"Why do you come here?"

"Because Steven deserves to be remembered."

Tears welled in both pairs of eyes, for the loss, for the pain. And Gwen wrapped her arms around Jack's daughter, as they swayed together.

"You love him."

"Yes."

"Don't. Leave him now before he hurts you too."

"I can't. I won't. There is nothing I can do to stop him losing everyone he loves, everyone he will ever love, but I won't let him lose me a moment before he has to."

Her voice was gentle, but firm.

Alice kept hearing the echo in her head, even as she angrily tried to silence it.

"No one should have to outlive their children."

Oklahoma Hello

Just a short scene.

"Well hello there."

Gibbs glared at him and firmly ordered, "Stop it." After all he had seen first hand the effect that Captain Jack Harkness had had on all he met, on his journey round the building so far, and it only got worse when he actually spoke.

"Can't I even say hello now?" Jack feigned hurt.

"Oh it's okay. That was a good hello." Abby cut across Gibbs' before he could voice any further objections. She turned an assessing gaze on the newcomer. Her face remained serious, but there was mirth dancing in her eyes. "Although I have always been rather keen to try out an Oklahoma hello."

Varying degrees of confusion showed on the faces surrounding them, but she could see by the gleam in Jack's eye that he had understood the reference.

"Anything for the lady." Jack said with a wide grin, moving towards Abby.

The sound of Gibbs clearing his throat stopped everyone in their tracks for a moment.

"Hold that thought!" Abby ordered, before turning to Gibbs. "Work first, then play, right. Major Mass Spec is still running the scans, but I do have something for you. The bullet that shot your Petty Officer definitely did not come from this gun." She grinned at Gibbs, bouncing on her heels.

"Play now." Jack wrapped his arms around her and dipped her, kissing her thoroughly, straightening them up only when they were both out of breath. He kissed her again gently, whispering, "Hello."

"Hello." Her voice came out huskier than she had expected.

Gibbs voice cut through the stunned silence, "Back to work now!" Sketching a bow in Abby's direction, Jack followed the team out of the lab.

Abby watched them leave, her fingers on her lips. "Definitely like the Oklahoma hello." she whispered with a nod.

I've added a new section to the site - Spoof Fiction. I'm not really into writing fan fiction myself and I certainly don't watch any series regularly enough to write about them at the moment, but I always enjoy writing spoofs. I've uploaded one so far - James Blond - Licenced to Drill.

Hi, thought I should get around to introducing myself at some point.

Calico Star at your service!

My website is nearly ready and contains my fanfiction (as per the title of the blog). I write for a number of shows, including Navy NCIS, Andromeda and Battlestar Galactica, and have done the occasional crossover as well.

Have a couple of fics in progress at the moment (progress being a relative term as they have come to a bit of a standstill, but hopefully the writers block will clear soon, and then all will be clear sailing again).

Anyhow, that is me for the moment.

I know, it's a little off-topic, but I consider reaching 900 reviews quite an achievement (it's taken me over five and a half years after all!)

The review is of the new The Incredible Hulk movie starring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt and Tim Roth.

Introduction

I've set up this blog as a progress journal for my sister-in-law (online persona "Callico Star") and myself ("CaptainD" - with names like these we should be superheroes!! I wonder if there's an opening for us in The Ultimates...) if I ever get round to writing any - I tend more towards spoofs and parodies of exisitng literature / films / series than actual fan fiction. Still, you never know.

When the new website for "Callico"'s fanfiction is up, I'll also announce it here.
